The “New Frankfurt” was an urban planning program between 1925 and 1930 that encompassed all areas of urban design, but was best known for its housing construction activities. The housing estates that were built each had their own individual characteristics. In the Bruchfeldstraße housing estate in Niederrad, for example, the rows were arranged in a sawtooth pattern, which is why it is popularly known as “Zickzackhausen” (Zigzag Town). The mural painted by artist Justus “Cor” Becker not only shows the housing estate with its typical roof terraces, it is also located in this very area. This image was based on a black-and-white photograph from 1927, supplemented by parts of the skyline in the background.
